Day two in Dublin started late! We slept in after the long and busy hours of day 1. The highlight of the day was spending time with friends: Lauren Michelle Stevens, and with Lyle & Nancy Carter.

We actually started the day with lunch at The Elephant and Castle pub in the Temple Bar section of Dublin. The food was great and the ambiance perfectly Irish – it was recommended to us by our hotel concierge.

We then walked over to see the Book of Kells in the Long Room of Trinity College Library, one of eight buildings, which holds nearly three million manuscripts and books. It also holds the oldest harp to survive from Ireland, probably from the 1500’s.

We saw the book of Kells previously, and again it renewed our admiration for the process undertaken by monks on the Island of Iona in the 9th century. It is a lavishly decorated scribing of the four Gospels. This is a close up of one of the drawings on one of the pages… A photo of a poster in the bookshop.

Then we hopped on to a Hop On/Off Bus to go over to the city jail museum. We climbed the stairs to the top and were surprised and delighted to see our very good friends, Lyle and Nancy Carter, whom we first met when Ted was pastor in Shafter!

It was a great serendipity to be able to see them and talk for a few hours! Later, we went over to the Quay’s Restaurant where we met up with Lauren Michelle, a friend from our home church in Cupertino.

This meeting was planned, as she is living in Ireland for one year. We enjoyed traditional Irish food with wonderful conversation. We are really proud of her, and amazed at her continued life experience and maturity.

It was a fine day #2 in Ireland. Tomorrow we rent a car and drive south.

  1. Ah the memories you are creating! Lee and I were privileged to see the Book of Kells at Trinity College, too, when we were chaperones on Jenna’s Leigh HS band trip to Dublin. I love Ireland!
