One of the Aran Islands, near Galway, is called Inishmore, and it attracts world wide travelers due to 1) the 3,000 year old stone fort named Dun Aonghasa, and 2) the wool sweaters the people on this Island create. We drove 45 minutes to the ferry service. After a one hour ferry ride to the island, we rented bicycles and explored for several miles.

The fort is impressive. it walls are hugely thick. It goes back to 800 BC.

The drop-off of some 500 feet to the ocean is also impressive with these cliffs.

Everything in western Ireland is about stone. From the barren and outward, stone walls and stone buildings are everywhere.

We ended the day exploring the Spanish Arch area of Dublin, and enjoyed dinner on the patio, watching all the young people who swarm Galway.

  1. Those sweaters are great, though, and they last forever. I am so glad you visited Inishmore, a unique place. Thanks for the blog and the photos. I am reliving my trips to Ireland through the two of you and learning about some new places I need to visit.
