We left Melbourne at 11 am on Sunday in our rental car to drive south on the Great Ocean Road.
This is a road similar to highway 1 at Big Sur, with lots of rocky cliffs and breaking waves. The mountains are not as tall, but the water is a brilliant turquoise blue.
After four hours of driving, with two additional hours of breaks, we arrived at 5:30 pm in the small town of Marengo, and our stay-over was at the Marengo Holiday Park.
This place is like a KOA, except that our small pre-fab cabin has a kitchen and bathroom… But the view is amazing – overlooking the ocean and a protected seal island.
Ted went swimming in Bass Strait of the Indian Ocean! The temperature was similar to Santa Cruz, maybe a tiny bit warmer. But the water was clear and beautiful. Ted caught a couple larger waves.
Strangest statement given to us on this trip was by the manager at this place…
“By the way, if you hear noises like wild pigs outside your bedroom window tonight, don’t worry, the koalas like to hang out by the tree near your cabin, and yea, it’s also mating season for the wallabies So they can be a little noisy.”
