We had our first disappointment of the trip while staying in Grand Portage, MN. It rained all night and into Saturday morning with winds that created waves on Lake Superior to make it look like an ocean. Our boat ride to Isle Royale National Park was cancelled due to those big waves and heavy wind. Saturday would have been the last trip of the season for day trips, so we missed the opportunity, and can’t catch another day trip this year.
So we left Grand Portage and drove to Duluth, MN. While driving we saw the waves, and are very glad we did not take a boat today! So after setting up camp on the Wisconsin side of Duluth, we visited the Duluth Trading Company store, and had fun poking around the area.
On Sunday, instead of visiting the island from the Minnesota side, we’ll drive 200 miles to the Isle Royal National Park Visitor Center on the other side of Lake Superior, located on the upper peninsula of Michigan. This is ‘plan B’ to both learn about Isle Royale and get Sue into Michagan that she’s not visited before, and get her credit towards her 50 state goal. The trailer will stay near Duluth and we’ll be fancy free driving to Michigan on Sunday.
