The first city that we visited in Alaska is Kecthikan, as it is one of the southermost cities in this big state. It is big: 2X Texas, 3X California, 6X Wyoming, 470X Rhode Island… 6,640 miles of mainland coastline (33,904 if you count the islands.) Alaska has 70 active volcanoes, 3,000 rivers, and 3 million lakes. And the federal government manages 64% of it all.
As we cruise north, away from Ketchikan, the channel is narrow and the surrounding mountains are bigger than those in the SFO Bay Area. There are trees everywhere. It is quite lovely.
We enjoyed a stroll around the tiny town of Ketchikan. We saw our first Alaskan Bald Eagles, a beautiful river with a fish ladder, and strolled down married man’s trail. With this visit, Ted visited his 50th state!
We’re on our veranda on the ship again watching the water, light, and mountains as we sail toward our next city. We are exploring areas of the world we have not seen before, and are enjoying it all.
