Delft is an enchanting old city with canals and bridges that criss-cross the historic section and charming squares and neighborhoods around nearly every corner.  The main method of transportation here seems to be cycling and trains, and with 20,000 university students in Delft, the bike lanes are full of people riding bicycles — from the very young to a few elderly great-grandmothers — all making their way to their destination.

While in Delft for two days, we:

  • Walked nearly a mile, pulling our suitcases, from the train station to our booked B&B near the university.
  • Rented two bicycles (10 Euros each for 24 hours) and rode 25 km around the city.  So much fun!
  • Took a canal boat ride to learn more about the history, culture, oldest buildings, and longest canal tunnels.
  • Enjoyed meeting local residents and eating in outdoor cafes three times.
  • Walked, and walked, around the old town square and historic neighborhoods.
  • Relaxed in the wonderful living room and patio of our B&B and thoroughly enjoyed talking with Andrew (see pic below) who is a university student from the Dutch island of Curacao doing an internship at the Casa Julia B&B.
  • Took advantage of wonderful, warmer, weather by spending lots of time outdoors

Tomorrow we will take the train to Amsterdam.  We look forward to exploring that city and also embarking on a week long boat-and-bike tour through tulip fields and near windmills.  Enjoy a few more pictures of our adventure in Delft:
