We began our trek in the Appalachian mountains, staying near the lovely town of Luray, Virginia, and we saw our fourth National Park of this adventure – the wonderful Shenandoah National Park. This is the 34th NP in our goal to visit all 59.
A primary way to enjoy this National Park is to drive the Skyline Road (which follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains) to take-in the vistas from many turnouts, access the hiking trails, and revel in the glorious Shenandoah Valley. Our main takeaway from this area is how green it is. There are canopies of green trees everywhere we looked and the frosting on the cake was the chance to glimpse the fall colors which are beginning to appear.
When we reached the highest point of the drive, near Hawksbill Peak at 4,051 feet elevation, we took some time to just sit and enjoy the view looking east over Virginia.
We didn’t do too much hiking, but it was fun to walk along a short section of the Appalachian Trail. And after that first drive along Skyline Road, we headed back down into the Shenandoah Valley and found the Old Hill Cidery near Timberville where we got to taste eight unique ciders from their large orchard. Sue was in heaven!
On Sunday we biked the eight mile Hawksbill Trail in Luray that follows the river in town and then headed off to find another cidery, a winery, and a brewery. It was a lovely afternoon.
We fell in love with Virginia as much as we enjoyed Ohio. At least during this month of the year. ; )
