The Baptistery is Florence's oldest building dating to the 11th century. This Venetian-glass ceiling-mosaic of Christ was done in the late 1200's by workers from St Mark's In Venice (which we saw earlier in Venice.) This "Last Judgment" image is clearly the old medieval world view of damnation, with Christ judging us with a thumbs up or thumbs down. It's sad so many churches still live with that archaic worldview. But this Baptistry is incredible, especially Ghirberti's bronze door panels that were added in the 1400's.
