We arrived in Skagway on Wednesday morning ready for an outdoor adventure. While Skagway is the gateway to the history of the Klondike gold rush of 150 years ago, for us it was a day to enjoy the wilderness of Alaska with a hike and a float down an Alaskan river.
We were picked up by a guide, Brooke, who took us 10 miles up a river, and led us on a two mile hike that had an elevation gain of over 500 feet.
During the journey, Brooke showed us which plants were edible and which are lethal. Ted was always volunteering to try Brooke's offerings of leaves, stems, and flowers, and even asked for a second helping of one type of leaf!

We learned there are no ticks nor poisonous snakes here, and were cautioned what to do if we come upon a brown bear. We learned of logging efforts here, and the trails used by the gold miners.
We enjoyed a calm and peaceful raft trip down the river, followed by a walk through downtown Skagway… all five blocks of it. The hike was great exercise, and Brooke was an energetic, vibrant young lady that loved life and the outdoors. It was a fun day.
Our weather has been great all week, and we feel so fortunate to really see some of Alaska in all its beauty. Thank you, God. It is glorious.
